can与 be able to都可以表示“能够”、“可以”等意思。can和be able to 都表示“能够做某事”但be able to 更加强调通过一定的努力和尝试后才能做到某事。但二者在具体用法上还是存在着一定区别的。

　　1)can could 表示能力;可能 (过去时用could),

　　只用于现在式和过去式(could)。be able to可以用于各种时态。

　　They will be able to tell you the news soon. 他很快就能告诉你消息了。

　　2)只用be able to 的情况

　　a. 位于助动词后。

　　b. 情态动词后。

　　c. 表示过去某时刻动作时。

　　d. 用于句首表示条件。

　　e. 表示成功地做了某事时，只能用was/were able to， 不能用could。

　　He was able to flee Europe before the war broke out. = He managed to flee Europe before the war broke out.

　　注意事项

　　凡表示“经过努力、设法做成某事”时不用 can，须用 be able to。

　　如：

　　The fire spread through the hotel very quickly , but everyone _____ get out .

　　A . had to B . would C . could D . was able to

　　句意为：大火弥漫整个旅馆，但人们还是设法逃了出来。故正确选项为D。
